At my house while she frolics in FL. I am tasked with maintainence for it because...well...it seems to have been neglected *grumble*.

I know it needs a oil change, brake fluid flush, and most likely new front brakes (front pads and rotors, rear drums). All this on mom and dad’s dime too, thankfully. Will probably take it to a shop for an list of needed repairs, i have no idea what needs to be done, :/.

Pretty sure that’s a Corolla. They don’t need maintenance. Ever. They just keep going.

I did an oil change on my sister’s Corolla recently. Same generation. It was laughably easy. One of the most straightforward oil changes I’ve ever done.

Sounds like my ex-girlfriend. Usually I drove everywhere, but when she occasionally drove I’d start gritting my teeth knowing the car needed alot of help and have to plan my month around her car. Why is the CEL on again?!

Actually, the brakes acted the same way as my Grand Prix before I flushed the brake fluid or got new pads and rotors. Of course, no one but dad has any idea when the brakes were last done, and he had jury duty today....

I was thinking of taking it to a shop for that, for ~$25 they'll do all fluids and lube the doors. Plus I have no way to lift the car up to do it myself.

Fuck that shit - I tried an oil change on a friend’s Corolla and broke the damn oil filter socket!

Ah yes, that reminds me, I'll have to sit her down and teach her how to change a tire....

Pads don’t usually lead to a soft pedal unless the pads are so far gone that the piston can’t extend anymore. I doubt that’s the case because hen it wouldn’t be feel as much as you wouldn’t have brakes and most brakes don’t allow the piston to go that far. Squishy pedal usually means fluid.

Corollas are simple to work on, for the most part. Chances are she probably doesn’t need shoes, unless she has like 300k on the car. Rear brakes on those last forever. Parts should be dirt cheap on RockAuto too.

Were you using a universal one? Or one of the dedicated ones for the canister size?

Huh, didn’t know that. I just know barely anything had been done to it, and pads are consumables.

I have to pick up some meds later, so I'll take it for a spin for an amateur diagnostic.

So let someone else take the blame if it gets botched? Got it!

Dedicated one. I suspect the $15 price and the cast construction did not help at all.

Damn. Someone also definitely over-tightened that filter, I have to imagine. I had to use a breaker bar on my sister’s...

Bah, it’s a Corolla, it doesn’t need anything. Those cars will never die, ever, even if you try to kill them.

Kidding aside, not a bad idea to at least do the fluid services and filters, including the trans if it’s never been done.

It's hard to when you don't have any proper tools or the know-how, :/.

Will your parents subsidize tool and shop manual purchases? It might actually be cheaper than paying for labor. With a set of wrenches, sockets and screwdrivers, along with a factory shop manual, anything is possible!

I highly doubt it, not when they can pay someone else to do it. Another factor is free time, I only have so much nowadays, :/.

Only time I know for sure I have free is every other Saturday morning, plus I'm working on other projects, like getting my lawn mowers working, :/

Join the club. I basically don’t have any responsibilities aside from work, and I’m still busy all night, every night. But I made this bed, and now I have to lie in it.

I think I’ve been a member for a few years now, lol. House and yard maintainence on top of fatherhood and husbandry, lol.
